Yoga is an ancient Indian practice which has been around for thousands of years. It originated as a way to find balance and peace, both within oneself and in the world. Today, it’s more popular than ever before with many people practicing yoga on a regular basis – even if that person is still not sure what “yoga” really means! If you’re looking for some tips on how to get started with yoga, here are a few tips and tricks for total beginners!
What do I need?
One very common question when starting out: What do I need? While there aren’t any specific materials required (although mats can be helpful!), one of the most important things you’ll need is a place to practice. The floor will work, but if you can find somewhere with even ground and a quiet space for yourself, it’s going to make things easier.
Yoga and meditation go hand-in-hand
While yoga itself may not be strictly considered “meditation”, many people choose to take the time during their yoga session – whether that means sitting in silence or practicing guided imagery – as a way to truly focus on themselves and what they’re doing throughout each pose. Whether meditating before your session or at the end as a cool down period, this is something that should absolutely be worked into any new yogi’s schedule!
It doesn’t have to be complicated
The beauty of yoga is that there are so many different styles out there; from classical Iyengar Yoga (which focuses much more heavily on alignment) to Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga (a flowing style which gives less attention to form), everyone can find something they enjoy. This also means that there’s no “right” way to do yoga: if you’re able to stand and breathe while holding a pose – even for just a second or two – it counts.
Remember your breathing
Breath is the foundation of any yoga practice, so make sure you take time in each pose (whether standing or sitting) to focus on inhaling and exhaling deeply. Remembering how good it feels when we allow ourselves to take full breaths can help us move through poses more easily and with less resistance; this will not only increase flexibility, but reduce tension as well.
Join yoga classes if you can
If you have the opportunity to take a class, this isn’t something you want to pass up! Yoga teachers can offer so much insight into what your body is doing and why – not just physically, but emotionally as well. This kind of guidance will help ensure that you’re always getting the most out of your yoga practice and helping yourself grow in any way possible.
If it’s uncomfortable
If there are parts of a pose or movements that feel particularly intense or “weird”, don’t be afraid to speak up about them. Many yoga students (both new and advanced) may work on things like back bends without knowing how their hamstrings might react; if an instructor knows ahead of time they can make adjustments for those who aren’t ready for such movements yet.
